The Georgia Tech online masters in computer science program is a massive commitment and unlike any learning I have done in the past. I am excited to begin classes next week and am still trying to wrap my head around the time investment required. To understand my decision to enroll in the program some background is helpful. In the spring of 2019 I graduated from Boston College with a BS in computer science and a BA in mathematics, which did not leave a lot of flexible credits for electives. After graduation I began working for the MITRE corporation. The way MITRE works for software engineers is that we divide our time between multiple projects, which are our responsibility to find or propose. Thus, I find myself face to face with a wide rage of projects, restricted only by my own technical (in)ability. In contrast with the liberal arts education at Boston College, many of my peers at MITRE graduated from intensely technical colleges. While I value the ability to dissect teleological arguments, our government sponsors do not delegate much funding to such things. This has reinforced the need for continuous learning in my mind and led to my discovery of the OMSCS program at Georgia Tech. Ultimately, I hope to gain exposure to areas of interest that I would not encounter in my software engineering role as well as fill the technical gaps in my undergrad computer science education.
